| 7. | Independent Living Program |
| | Several thousand children enter the justice system (Juvenile and Family Court systems) as a result of abuse, neglect or divorce. Many of these children are separated from their parents and placed in kin-care foster care. Research shows that most successful people have benefited from a life coach/mentor to validate/guide their ideas through life’s challenges. Youth coming from these broken families, for the most part, lack a significant adult to help them navigate through life’s challenges in search of a bargain in the areas of career and educational success. Asante provides youth and their families with enhanced opportunities to improve their skills in: • Assessing their natural interests and aptitudes • Navigating the college application/college selection process • Securing financial aid • Maintaining college enrollment post admission • Enhancing independent living, self-advocacy, socialization, leadership and community service skills. • At least two field trips to participating youth and their families • Seminars targeted to parents/guardians of youth on the skills required to support their youth in obtaining a higher education. • Services are available to all youth, not just for youth in the foster care system • The school system has only one/two counselor with caseloads of 200 plus. Most school counselors concentrate on dealing with negative behavior but not providing the students with a one-on-one plan on how to get a college education • There are also some youth who do not have a significant adult to help them navigate through the college admission and financial aid process and easily give up out of frustration. • Asante is spearheading the mentoring component of this program in the Inland Empire |
