Elderly Caregiver Support and Counseling

Caring for loved ones frequently brings caregivers a great sense of joy, pride, accomplishment, and brings both individuals into a closer relationship; however, at times it can feel overwhelming. The level of stress and challenge depends on both the physical, mental and socio-economic status of both the caregiver and loved one who is being taken care of. It is not unusual for caregivers to experience feel anger, frustration, anxiety, shame and guilt for those feelings.

One of the most devastating effects of the demands of care giving, however, is depression. It has been estimated that nearly twenty percent of family caregivers suffer from some form of depression, and that over forty percent of caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients suffer from mild to moderate stages of depression during and after extended periods of care.

ASANTE Family Agency provides supportive services to prevent and intervene in the distress that may come with being a caregiver.  Having a professional who the caregiver can confide in about emotions or frustration often helps to prevent and reduce depression and feelings of confinement in many caregivers. The responsibilities of caring for a family member, especially one suffering from various stages of Alzheimer’s can feel like a jail sentence to many. This has nothing to do with how much someone loves or respects the relationship, or how close someone is to a certain family member, but with the constant and needy demands of those suffering from it.

ASANTE Family Agency offers individual and family counseling by a licensed Clinician  or master level Clinician  intern. The sessions may include one-on-one discussions with the caregiver, or other family members and friends.  The skilled Clinician s can elicit insight and enhance communication between family members in all types of care giving situations.
